ABILITY LEVELS - DFX CLUB

For Bike Park ability level for DFX PARK and RACE your child does not need to have the climbing/distance skills but all other skills should apply.

Beginner Rider I am still getting used to my bike and I ride on pavement or wide gravel trails. I can ride comfortably on a two wheel pedal bike and know how to use my hand brakes. I am still working at my stamina for longer distances and I haven't ridden much on dirt trails
Novice Rider I am comfortable on green and easy blue single track trails, I can confidently use my hand brakes and change gears. I can ride and carry momentum through bumpy, rooty sections of trail without putting my feet down. I can ride down some stairs, wide ladder bridges and skinnys on the ground. I am comfortable riding longer distances (8-10 km with breaks) and I don't complain when pedaling uphill.
Intermediate Rider I am comfortable on all blue single track trails. I can maintain my momentum and ride through rocky, rooty sections both up and down. I have good stamina both up and down trails and can pedal long distances (10-15 km with breaks). I can comfortably ride raised ladder bridges, small rock faces and teeter totters. I know how to do a front wheel lift.
Strong Intermediate Rider I am a strong rider on all blues and easy blacks and I can ride all or most of the features. I am confident on this level of trail in the Bike Park and cross country. I ride at a moderate but safe speed and carry my momentum. I can do a rear wheel lift, bunny hops, a track stand, and small jumps and drops with correct technique. I am excited to ride steep roll downs, raised ladder bridges and technical trails.
Advanced Rider I am comfortable at fast speeds on all black trails both cross country and in the Bike Park. I can pick a line through difficult technical sections, ride steep rock faces and raised skinnys. I have good technique and can carry and judge my speed to do medium jumps and drops. I am excited to ride long difficult trails and have good stamina for long climbs (15-20 km rides with breaks). I am prepared to be out on the trail or riding in the Bike Park all day.
Expert Rider I am confident at high speeds on all trails, I can climb easily up technical trails and ride all the features on black and some double black trails both cross country and in the Bike Park. I can clear large drops and jumps with correct technique. I love to ride and really want to push myself to be better and stronger on my bike.

Programs do sell out so book early to avoid disappointment.

Things you might like to know about our programs:

Is program space limited?

Yes, book early! Availability is limited for all programs and do sell out quickly.

Do lesson prices include lift access?

All listed prices for DFX SUMMER Club Programs include a full season's pass to access the Whistler Mountain Bike Park. All DFX SUMMER program passes include unlimited daily lift access outside of the program dates as well (for when you want to ride with your child on non-program days!), and the option to purchase additional lesson days at a special rate.

A seasons pass is NOT included for spring and fall programs.

Can my child's pass be reused from the winter season?

Yes! Remember to hold on to your child winter season pass! Once you renew for the summer your child can head straight to their program and avoid a trip to Guest Relations plus save on pass reprint fees. Your child should bring their pass to bike camp every day in case the groups need to access the mountain, we recommend that you leave your child's pass attached to their hydration pack. You will need to sign a bike park waiver before you use your pass for the first time. These will be available for parents to sign on the first day of each program. If you are using your pass before the first day of the program you will need to head into Guest Relations to fill in the waiver.

Does my child need to be of a certain ability to join?

No! All abilities are welcome, from beginners right through to advanced and expert riders.

Are there exceptions on the minimum age requirements?

Yes we will accept 4 year olds into DFX CLUB. The 5 year old age limit is our recommendation based on physical and emotional stamina required for a full day of bike riding, however we have definitely come across some 4 year olds that are up to this challenge. A typical day includes, 2 hours riding trails, playing games, heading back to Blackcomb Kids for lunch, approximately 2 more hours of riding in the afternoon, playing at a playground and heading back to Blackcomb at the end of the day. The trails we will ride include heading to Lost Lake - building up to Tin Pants and later the single track trails, other easy single track trails in the valley, heading to Meadow Park and Rainbow Park on the Valley Trail etc. Many of the rides will include a considerable amount of uphill. The requirement is also that each child can ride confidently without training wheels and confidently use hand brakes.

We have accepted children who are almost 5 on the condition that if, at the discretion of the instructor, they are not ready for the program they will be asked to try again next season, a refund for the Program less the days used will be given and a cancellation fee of $50 will apply (you can avoid the $50 cancellation fee by having the refund applied to your child's profile as a credit).

If you feel your child is ready, you know them best and know whether they are ready to meet these challenges, we would love to have them come and ride with us. Groups will be sorted on ability and stamina so if they are confident on a bike and used to pedaling fair distances I hope there will be a group that they will fit into.

PLEASE NOTE: For all other programs no age exceptions will be made.

How are the groups organized?

Groups are organized according to age and ability. Groups are pre organized before the first day of the session, please fill in the DFX questionnaire that will be emailed to you to help form the groups. Groups are team-based: similar ability/age groups are matched to create a team of children who ski/ride with a team of coaches.

Will my child have the same coach for the entire session?

All groups are designed to have the same coach and group for the duration of the season. However things do change throughout the season so your coach may change due to injury, differences in the rate that the children in the class are progressing or other unforeseen circumstances. If this occurs please be understanding, we will do everything we can to make any changes run smoothly for you and your child.

Will my child be evaluated?

Yes! Evaluation and development of skills is ongoing throughout the season. Your child's coach will give you daily updates and you will receive an end of season progress card. If you have any questions about your child's progression and development please talk to your child's coach or the program supervisor.

Are the programs full or half days?

All programs are full-day for all ages.

What if I am unable to pick up my child at 3:30?

Aftercare is available 3:30 to 5:30 Monday – Thursday at Blackcomb Kids. Season long pricing and drop in pricing are available.

If my child misses a day can he/she join in on another day of club?

Unfortunately not. Due to hundreds of children enrolled in these programs, if a day is missed, unfortunately we are not able to reschedule your child for another day.

Can I book my child in for additional days?

Yes! Additional days in the daily destination program are available at the special rate of $61 plus tax ($80 plus tax if a lift ticket is needed). Lunch is included. Additional days are available in the DFX Daily program only, which involves working on downhill skills in the Whistler Bike Park. Please call the Reservation Center on 1-800-766-0449 to book additional days. Please go into Guest Relations to pick up a lesson voucher, this can be done in advance.

Additional race training days are also available on Wednesdays this includes a day of race training with C4 coach Cory Leclerc. The focus will be on the Phat Wednesday Course with coaching including, course inspections, race instruction runs and skill development. $77 per day (includes Phat Wednesday Race entry fee).

Will you be doing week long camps?

New for this year we will be offering 2 week long camps June 30 – July 4 and July 7 – 11. These will do a mixture of cross country and downhill riding. Groups will be formed based on age and ability.

If you are not available for those weeks I would also be pleased to recommend WORCA who offer week long cross country bike camps for all ages, please refer to their web site www.worca.com for more details. These camps are very popular and go on sale in May and they do sell out really fast.

LOGISTICS

Where are the programs located?

Programs are offered at a variety of base meeting locations dependent on program-type. Click on the Program Links Tab above for full details on base meeting locations for each program.

Is lunch included?

No Lunch is not included for any DFX club program. Lunch is not provided so a bagged lunch will be required with snacks suitable to be carried on the trails. Lunch packs can be left inside and a fridge is accessible.

For DFX CLUB (strong intermediate and above) and DFX RIDE groups lunch on xc days should be suitable to be packed into your child's hydration pack and eaten on the trails. If your child is staying for aftercare please provided extra snacks.

Will water be accessible?

Water will be available at lunch but while we are on the trails they will need to carry their own water, a hydration pack is required. This can also be used to carry snacks and swim gear. For DFX CLUB (strong intermediate and above) and DFX RIDE the hydration pack should be large enough that lunch can be carried on the trail.

EQUIPMENT INFORMATION

Does my child need their own equipment?

Yes. Children must provide their own equipment for all programs. A well-fitting, well maintained bike is essential for the program. See each DFX page for specifics on the bike requirements for each program.

Bikes must be in good working order:
We suggest taking the time to take your child's bike to your local bike shop and get it tuned up ready for the summer. Bike shops are very busy at the start of summer so make sure you leave plenty of time to get this done before your child starts riding. Things to check for:

Brakes – The brakes are working well, your child should be able to pull the brakes levers easily to bring the bike to a complete stop when travelling at speed. Your child should be able to reach the brake levers easily.
Suspension – The suspension is working; not leaking oil and can be moved up and down when weight is applied
Chain – is oiled and is free of rust
Gears – can be changed easily and do not skip
Tires – are not bald, have lots of tread left and are pumped up firmly
Bolts – all bolts and nuts should be tight and secure
You may be asked throughout the season to get your child's bike tuned up or modified. It is important that this is done before the next session to allow your child to ride safely on the trails.

Why do bikes have to have hand brakes?

Hand brakes (front and back) are essential for riding trails safely, as they give a much greater level of control than coaster brakes. We have found that if kids have both coaster brakes and hand brakes they will always use the coaster brakes and as soon as that choice is removed they progress quickly with the hand brakes. The coaches will help teach the correct braking techniques to allow independent use and finesse for controlling speed. We are hoping to progress all groups to single track trails with roots, rocks, ladder bridges and maybe even a rock face or two, hand brakes are critical for safe descending down such features. Even going on the Tin Pants trails (the wider gravel trails at Lost Lake) using coaster brakes would give less control as on gravel they skid and slide very easily.
Hand brakes (front and back) can be added and coaster brakes removed from some bikes that come with coaster brakes. Please see your local bike shop to see if this is possible for your child's bike.

Does my child need gears?

Gears are recommended as we do a fair amount of climbing but as the gearing ratio on kids bikes aren't always ideal they can do without if necessary for beginner and novice levels. BMX bikes fitted with front and back hand brakes work well for smaller children.

What should my child wear?

For riding regular shorts and t-shirt work well, with a sweater for the colder days. Closed toes shoes and socks, no flip flops or sandals please. A well-fitting helmet is mandatory. Please ensure that your child's helmet fits well and covers the forehead. Full face helmets are required for DFX CLUB (strong intermediate and above) and DFX RIDE on park days. Full face helmets can be used for trail riding but can be hot on warm days. Arm and leg armor are required every day for all groups (full body armor is recommended for DFX PARK, DFX RACE, DFX CLUB (strong intermediate and above) and DFX RIDE on park days) Wet weather gear (jacket and pants) is recommended as we will be riding if it is raining. Please apply sunscreen in the morning and have some available so the coaches can help them re-apply at lunch. Please label all equipment and clothing.

Where can I find kids sized body armor?

Try at the Garbanzo Bike and Bean or Garbanzo Kids located at the base of Whistler Mountain. Small armor can be hard to find but the selection is improving. In the past we have recommended using adult arm pads for leg pads, BMX or skateboard pads are an option for small arms.
